Christine Hillis wishes to help those suffering from mental illnesses on a tour around the country.
OXFORD COUNTY - A mental health worker in Oxford County is preparing to tour the country facilitating mental health conversations.
Christine Hillis will be stopping at Canadian Mental Health Association branches to help give residents a better understanding of the services provided but also to discuss her book Seeing Through the Label.
"Seeing Through the Label was written originally through a lot of journaling just through my own experiences and developed more into a book. I talk about some experiences I have had but I also bring forward different perspectives and ideas and everything I do I always try and add somewhere of a positive twist on it."
Hillis says the prairie provinces and territories don't have the resources like Ontario residents do. She will be spending the entire month of May travelling the Country in hopes of turning an uncomfortable topic into a comfortable conversation.
Hillis says due to her age and positively, she is able to bring youthful enthusiasm to a typically dark issue.
She says the purpose of the tour is to keep the conversation going. "A lot of times the more we talk about it, the more open people are about it and I think that the more we do with stigma reducing projects, eventually we will get the attention of the government and have more funding and things like that so a lot of that is very important."
Hillis has also invited mental health professionals from each community she visits to speak to attendees about the services available in their area.
