Blandford Blenheim council will get no say as to whether or not a medicinal marijuana facility can open in their community.
An application is before Health Canada to open a Medicinal Marijuana Production Facility in Drumbo.
Blandford Blenheim council received the letter of intent from the Canadian Medical Marijuana Center back in February.
Mayor Marion Wearn says council was surprised to receive the letter.
"Our only concern is that we have nothing in our zoning bylaw, no definition or decision on where these factories or barns should be located. Oxford County's Planning Department will be looking into this for probably a number of municipalities in the township to see where they are best placed."
Wearn says council will have no jurisdiction on the matter.
"It's part of his application process that he has to notify the township and emergency services and what not as part of his application. That basically is what the letter was about. He has quite a process to go through yet and there is no guarantee one way or another whether the application will be approved or not."
"We can't do anything about it at all. We wont be asked to approve it, we will just be notified where it is and that they have the appropriate licensing and that they have followed all of the security measures that are required by that licensing."
Council has asked the Oxford County Planning Department to define "Medicinal Marijuana Production Facility" and to review and identify the zones in which the use would be permitted.
Wearn says the applicant plans to construct a new building on the County Road 29 property for the facility should the application get the green light from Health Canada.
