UPDATE: Ottawa Approves Plan to Move Marineland's Whales and Dolphins

It will relocate 30 belugas and four dolphins to aquariums in the United States.

UPDATE (January 27th @ 7:00 a.m.) - Ottawa has conditionally approved a plan for Marineland to move its whales and dolphins to facilities south of the border.

The shuttered Niagara Falls theme park says it has received support from Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson. In her own statement, Thompson said she had a constructive meeting with Marineland officials about the proposal.

Premier Doug Ford is supporting the move, saying it's good for the animals because they'll have better living conditions.

NIAGARA FALLS - Marineland is looking to ship its captive whales and dolphins to several institutions in the United States.

The Niagara Falls theme park has presented a plan yesterday, labelling it as a "rescue solution" for the marine mammals in its care. The Canadian Press has cited several sources from Marineland saying Ottawa must meet the narrow deadline, or it will proceed with a plan to euthanize the 30 belugas and four dolphins.

The offices of Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson has confirmed that the new permit applications are under review and says the process will be expedited.

Marineland has been closed to the public since the late summer of 2024.
