Oxford County Public health is getting behind nutrition month.
March is Nutrition month and Oxford County Public Health wants you to unlock the potential of food.
Registered Dietician Kelly Ferguson explains what that means.
"That's really speaking to all the wonderful things that food can do for our body, food can fuel us to stay energized throughout the day, it can help improve our health and prevent chronic diseases."
Ferguson says if your trying to lose weight, that's great but make sure to avoid the fad diets.
"It's important that we focus on healthy eating habits that we can sustain and enjoy for the long term. So their is a lot of diets ou there and a lot of misinformation on nutrition, so it's important to seek relaible information from a dietician before making a drastic change."
Oxford County Public Health’s dietitians suggest keeping in mind the following tips:
- Avoid “fad diets” and, instead, focus on healthy eating habits that you enjoy enough to stick with in the long run
- Eat together, as this provides health benefits for the whole family
- Help children discover healthy eating habits by teaching them to shop and cook – when kids are the chefs they are much more likely to eat what they make
Many residents do not realize consulting with a dietitian is often a free service available in the community. In Oxford County, dietitians are available in select grocery stores, health centres, and hospitals. A listing can be found at www.oxfordcounty.ca/nutrition along with other program and service information.
