The Toronto Maple Leafs have named their 26th captain in franchise history.
TORONTO - A new leader has been announced for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The organization has announced Austin Matthews as the 26th captain for the franchise. Matthews takes over the role from John Tavares, who served as the captain for 6 seasons after becoming a member of the Leafs on July 1, 2018. Tavares is only under contract for one more season, while Matthews is just beginning a new four-year deal.
Matthews has served as an alternate captain since the 2019-20 season. He is the first American to be named captain of the Leafs and only the second non-Canadian to serve as the leader.
