The Indigo Lounge Wellness Centre and Eatery in Tillsonburg is now using paper straws.
TILLSONBURG - A local restaurant is hopping on the paper straw bandwagon.
Tillsonburg's Indigo Lounge Wellness Centre and Eatery is now offering paper straws with their smoothies.
Owner/Operator Kelly Spencer was very impressed when she first tested them out.
"You'd think they'd be flimsy like paper but they're almost like a cardboard; they're very sturdy and strong. For the amount of use a straw gets, the drink is gone in about a half hour or less, it holds up just fine."
Spencer says her employee Abi Robillard, who happens to be a University of Guelph student, convinced her to make the switch.
"They had just banned the plastic straws, they're looking to get rid of those and she kind of gave me that push. So I started looking into it and I found a Canadian company in Alberta called Green Mulch."
Green Mulch is a company that distributes compostable restaurant materials to businesses.
On top of the paper straws; the Indigo Lounge also uses compostable smoothie cups and takeout containers.
On the yoga and fitness side of her business, Spencer encourages people to bring in reusable water bottles. Instead of selling single use plastic water bottles, the Indigo Lounge has their own water coolers on site, and sells their own glass water bottles to whoever needs one.
