Drivers, parents, and kids are reminded to work together and obey all rules to make this a safe school year.
OXFORD COUNTY - Students in Oxford will be going back to school soon which means drivers will come across more school buses on the roads.
Drivers are reminded that it is illegal to pass a school bus on the road when it has come to a complete stop, has its stop sign out, and has its red lights flashing.
OPP Constable Lisa Narancsik says drivers could face a pretty big penalty if they don't stop for a bus in these conditions.
"There is a set fine that's $490 for passing a school bus and also six demerit points attached to that. So it's a pretty hefty fine and hefty demerit points."
Drivers are also reminded to be on the lookout for kids walking or riding their bikes to and from school as well.
Narancsik says caregivers should also make sure their children know how to safely cross the street.
"We want to make sure as parents too that our kids are going to the intersections and crossing at the crosswalks and also following their rules that they need to; stop, looking, and listening for traffic, making sure the pathway is clear before they cross the roads as well."
Lastly student bicyclists are reminded to always wear a helmet and familiarize themselves with the rules of the road, including hand signals, before hitting the streets.
