Police are reminding the public to never transfer money when dealing with strangers online.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police are warning the public about online scams after a local woman was duped out of $3,920.00.
Police say the young woman reported the online fraud last Friday. She had posted an ad on Kijiji to rent a room. A person by the name of Clara Campbell responded to the ad via email, stating that she would like to rent the room and would be sending a cheque.
The scammer told the woman she was not currently living in the country but she would be mailing the cheque to the victim's house. She then told the victim she needed help with a car that was delivered to Woodstock. The scammer told her she needed help with an outstanding balance and that she needed the victim to deposit the cheque in her account and then transfer the cash to the dealership.
The money was transferred before the victim realized she had fallen for a scam.
