Local Schools to Close if CUPE Strikes

All Thames Valley, London Catholic, and CSC Providence schools will be closed on Monday, if a deal is not reached between CUPE and the Ford Government before 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

ONTARIO - Time is running out for a deal to be reached between the Ford Government and the union representing Ontario's education workers.

Fifty-five thousand custodians, early childhood educators, educational assistants, and office administration staff will walk off the job on Monday, if the two sides don't come to an agreement before 5:00 pm on Sunday November 20th.

Several school boards have announced that their schools will be closed if this happens and all students will switch to virtual learning. This includes the Thames Valley District School Board, the London District Catholic School Board, and CSC Providence.

CUPE issued the five-day strike notice on Wednesday, saying it was able to reach a middle ground with the province in terms of wages, but claimed the province was refusing to "invest in the services that students need and parents expect." 

The two sides have agreed on a 3.59 percent wage increase, but CUPE is still fighting for higher staffing levels for educational assistants, librarians, office administration staff, and custodians. The union would also like to see an early childhood educator in every kindergarten classroom.
