Edmonton police may have more to say later today about charges against a suspect in a weekend terrorism attack.
A 30-year-old Somali refugee was taken into custody after a city police officer was struck by a car and then stabbed, and four other people were injured when they were hit by a rental truck fleeing police. He has been charged with five counts of attempted murder and five counts of dangerous driving. So far police have not proceeded with any terrorism charges.
An Edmonton officer was struck by a car then stabbed and four people were injured when they were hit by a rental truck fleeing police Saturday night. The officer, Mike Chernyk has been release from hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Heart FM spoke with West Region OPP Sargeant David Rektor about the incident. He says the incidents over the last couple of days have certainly been eye opening.
"Incidents like this and what you see happening south of the border, certainly causes one to pause and discern what's going on. We have to be alive to the fact there are people that are out there that have no want or regard for for the rules of the law that are in place that keep society safe."
Rektor adds the incident in Edmonton certainly hits close to home.
"Our organization looks at each one of these types of incidents and obviously we are very concerned, first and foremost our hearts go out to the officer involved in this and the family. Incidents like this are certainly not reflective of what we see on a daily basis in Canada and its very concerning."
The suspect in the Edmonton case had been investigated two years ago for extremist behaviour.
