Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Williams says social bubbles are still a good concept and it's recommended to keep your bubble up to ten people or less right now. He says they may have to lower those guidelines.
ONTARIO - The Province of Ontario does not have any immediate plans to scrap the concept of the social bubbles.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Williams was asked if social bubbles are not working, especially in the GTA, where we have seen a massive spike in cases recently. He says the concept of social bubbles is still a good one.
"The concept of the original cohort or social bubble is still one we value, the question is have people maintained consistency and vigilance in maintaining that. We have seen casualness and movement away from that, so that people had some in, some are connected with another one and it has become a lot less disciplined."
Right now it's recommended to keep your bubble to 10 people or less and Dr. Williams says they may have to lower those guidelines.
"We are concerned about that, should we restrict that back down if people find it too difficult to stay with 10 and you find they are now with this group and with that group and many in the house are not masking or are using the 6 foot distancing who were not originally apart of their 10 person social bubble."
Dr. Williams says the casualness started in August.
"It's like, we are doing great, let's just forget about the discipline in maintaining social bubbles. We are looking at that again to say can people be trusted to keep to 10, do we have to reduce it a little bit more."
He adds some people are still doing well with their social bubbles but others are clearly not and you can see by the numbers the impact that is happening.
