Heather Rennalls has been speaking at local libraries about Oxford County's black history, in honour of Black History Month.
OXFORD COUNTY - Black History month is a chance to celebrate our history and heritage, and Oxford County might have more of a role than many people believe.
Public Service Clerk at the Tillsonburg Library Heather Rennalls has been busy this month holding presentations around the county. "One of the presentation topics that I do talk about is the history of Oxford County. So I talk about the significance of Black History throughout Oxford County - in particular Norwich, Ingersoll, and Woodstock. And I also talk about the history of the Underground Railroad."
Rennalls says Oxford was involved in the Underground Railroad. "They did come to Ingersoll, probably stayed at the Ingersoll Inn and helped with the church. The church has been taken down, but it was built by ex-slaves and that's where a lot of them supposedly would have hid upstairs in the church and would have moved on to other places, to farms in Tillsonburg or wherever to find work."
There are still more presentations scheduled. "My next presentation is at the Otterville Public library, that would be on Tuesday March 1st, and I believe that starts at 7 o'clock."
