Nurses are on the front line in the battle against smoking. Today, health-care professionals gathered at the Elm Hurst Inn in Ingersoll for a workshop in how to help their patients quit smoking. The workshop was put on by the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario for health-care professionals to learn how to help motivate their patients to quit smoking, namely the health and financial benefits. Jillian Stephenson, a Public Health Nurse with Oxford County Emergency Services told Heart FM, "Many people start smoking because of stress or social aspects." She also said "It only takes 7-10 seconds for nicotine to hit the brain." She also warned the occasional smoker "It's highly addictive." There are many services offered to those who wish to quit smoking including www.smokershelpline.ca. The nurses are getting a boost to their efforts, as the province announced yesterday 23-thousand smokers who want to quit can get free counselling and a five-week course of over-the-counter nicotine gum and patches.
