Norfolk OPP say there will be a large police presence in Port Dover for Friday the 13th
NORFOLK COUNTY - It's that time of year again when the rumble of motorcycles can be heard heading into Port Dover as part of Friday the 13th
Norfolk OPP Constable Ed Sanchuk says with the weather forecast working in their favour, OPP expect large crowds in Dover.
"There will be obviously a heavy police presense and there will be RIDE programs set up throughout the County to ensure people are following those rules. However, with that being said, more importantly last year what I did see was the fact that some motorcyclists were actually texting and driving while coming into Port Dover and we really want to stress the importance of putting away the technology. It's not worth risking your life or the lives of innocent motorists on our roadways."
"We really want to stress the importance that one or two second can really save a life so before you change that lane, before you enter that intersection, make sure you give yourself that extra time. Make sure you give yourself that extra ability to look in both directions before you change your lanes and before you enter that intersection just incase a motorcyclist or cyclist does come through."
Norfolk OPP are also asking the public for information on the hit and run death of Chad Everets that happened follow a Friday the 13th a few years ago.
Sanchuk says Everets' was walking on Cockshutt Road North of Port Dover early May 14, 2011 when he was struck and killed by a vehicle.
"Police are asking anyone who may have seen Chad or the suspect vehicile in the early morning hours or may have information on this hit and run is being asked to contact Norfolk OPP. We do have a suspect vehicle in mind and it is a GMC, Chevolet, Oldsmobile or Pontiac between the years of 2000 or 2003, Ford or Mercury between the years of 1984 and 1994 and the colour is silver, metalic or beigue and it will have damage to the undercarriage."
Police are offering a $50,000 reward for any information that may lead to the person responsible.
