WOODSTOCK - A Landlord in Woodstock has been fined for not having working smoke alarms or carbon monoxide detectors at his building on 110 Huron Street.
Fire crews noticed the place was not equipped with the life saving materials after responding to a blaze on May 5th. A post fire safety inspection of the single family house uncovered the three violations of the fire code. Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods tells Heart FM why it is so important to have these live saving machines in every home.
"Right now the fire code states that every home needs smoke alarms on each level and outside the sleeping areas, so we want to make sure that is in fact on the level and outside the sleeping areas, so that when you are sleeping you are awakened by the sound of the smoke alarm, most fires happen between 11 p.m and 7 a.m when most people are sleeping."
The landlord did plead guilty to the violations and was hit with $3,750 in fines and court costs for the three violations.
1. Fine of $1,000 for failure to ensure smoke alarm was installed between the sleeping areas on the first floor.
2. Fine of $1,000 for failure to ensure smoke alarm was maintained in operating condition in the basement floor.
3. Fine of $1,000 for failure to ensure carbon monoxide alarm was installed adjacent to each sleeping area.
Woods says this serves as reminder to everyone to test your smoke alarms and CO detectors today and make sure they are working.
