What MP Dave MacKenzie thinks about anti-landfill protesters arriving at his office today
The Stop the Dump tour makes a stop in Woodstock today.
Anti-landfill protesters will picket at MP Dave MacKenzie's office this afternoon.
They accuse MacKenzie of being silent on a major issue for the community, as Walker Environmental Group attempts to open one of the largest landfills in the country in Beachville.
Heart FM spoke to MacKenzie last night about the protest, and he says he won't be at his office today, but he doesn't have a problem with the protesters taking a stand. "You know I have absolutely no issue with them being there. They're doing what they can to build their profile. I know of nothing that the federal government has in relation to that. The whole process is basically a provincial issue and the folks that are opposed to it are just trying to get their message out."
MacKenzie compares the situation to when the Salford dump was being planned. "It was planned to go to Salford where it eventually ended up going. The people in that area didn't want Woodstock's garbage in their backyard either. I think it's just a standard thing, I well accept it and I understand it. The problem is we're generating so much garbage in the country, we need to reduce that amount, but you're still going to have to find a place to put it."
He has agreed, however, to inquire about the significance of a lake on Carmeuse property near the proposed landfill site. "He's (Mike Farlow) asked me to check with the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to see whether or not there's any issue there. They've already talked with the provincial ministry about that and I would suggest that's probably where it will end up. But it certainly doesn't hurt for me to ask."
Today's protest is planned for 3PM at MacKenzie's office on Huron St. in Woodstock.
