Keep An Eye on Holiday Cooking

At this time of year there is a spike in cooking related fires and the Woodstock Fire Department is asking you to be extra careful.

It's the season for entertaining guests, office potlucks, and cooking fires.

With so much cooking going on Public Information Coordinator with the Woodstock Fire Department Lisa Woods tells us we need to keep an eye all those yummy dishes. "Cooking fires tend to increase at this time of year; so it is the Christmas cheer and having drinks with your friends, and even if you are cooking appetizers it is just a matter of staying where you are cooking, or making sure you put safety precautions in place before you decide to have that drink."  

It can only take a moment for a fire to get out of hand. To help prevent this Woods says to take the time to clean up your workspace whenever you are cooking. "In any area that you are cooking in you need to have a clean workspace - don't have paper products up next to a crock pot or anything like that, and make sure your smoke alarm or CO alarm are working. In the event if something does happen you are going to be notified as soon as possible and be able to escape." 

Some of those foods can also involve grease, and grease fires can be very dangerous: "Slide a lid over the top of the pot or pan or whatever is on fire and turn off the heat and just leave it there because if that pot has been on fire it is already hot," says Woods. "Don't try to reach for it in any way, shape, or form because you will drop it and burn your hand. You may have the smell in your house of course, but you can open you windows and put on some fans after that has gone out. Do not hesitate to have us come over to be assured the fire hasn't spread "
