A new program from Operation Sharing will help the less fortunate in our community pay for their vet bills.
WOODSTOCK - Operation Sharing has launched a new program for pet owners called the Jackson Fund Program.
The program was created to honour the memory of Carrie Sass's pet beagle, Jackson. Jackson passed away in May at the age of 10. Sass is taking on the role of volunteer coordinator with Operation Sharing's new program. The goal of the initiative is aimed at helping out people in need who have pets with vet bills. Agribrands Purina Canada Inc. already generously donates six large bags of dog and cat food monthly to Operation Sharing and has done so for years.
Sass has anxiety and bipolar disorder issues and Jackson came into her life when was in a dark place and helped her immensely with his unconditional love. She reached out to Operation Sharing, who were happy to help with this new program. She says Jackson would be proud.
“Jackson would have liked that (the new program). He loved everybody.”
Sass wants to help out all pet owners, whether it be dogs, cats or other household pets like parrots and guinea pigs.
“I would like to help out people in the community with pets who need help."
Stephen Giuliano, Operation Sharing chaplain/executive director, said he thinks this is a wonderful initiative and welcomed Sass in her role.
“I have seen a number of less fortunate people whose pet is sometimes their only friend. Poverty, with its associated depression, can leave people feeling a sense of isolation and a pet can fill a tremendous void for them."
It might take a while before Operation Sharing will hopefully receive enough donations before assistance can be provided for pet care. Hopefully, the community will recognize this as a valuable program and will donate to it, Giuliano said. Donations can be made directly to Operation Sharing or mailed to P.O. Box 20081, Woodstock, Ontario, N4S 8X8.
Cheques can be made to Operation Sharing identifying the Jackson Fund in the memo line. Donations of $10 or more can be receipted.
