Introducing Turtle Island Public School

The new school in the north of the Woodstock will be known as Turtle Island Public School.

WOODSTOCK/LONDON - We have a name for the new elementary school in the north end of Woodstock.

Trustees with the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) approved the name Turtle Island Public School yesterday. They also approved Northwest Public School for the new school in northwest London and White Pine Public School for the new school in southwest London.

Board Chair Beth Mai says the Naming Selection Committee collected all of the ideas through community input and they were voted on by members of the school communities. 

"One of the goals from our new Multi-Year Strategic Plan is engagement and collaboration. The Board of Trustees is grateful to these school communities for their thoughtful participation in the school naming process."

Those who participated in the vote got to rank all of the different options they had, and Turtle Island Public School was the most popular for Woodstock with 40 percent of the first-place votes. Northwest Public School received 43 percent of the first-place votes for the school in northwest London, and White Pine Public School received 69 percent of the first-place votes for the new school in southwest London.

Turtle Island Public School is currently under construction at 717 Knights Lane in Woodstock. It's a $31.9 million project, that will serve 856 students in Woodstock, Innerkip, Drumbo and Zorra. The school will also include a five-room child care centre for 10 infants, 30 toddlers, and 48 preschoolers.
