St. Mary's Catholic High School teams up with the Alzheimer Society of Oxford
Singing voices of all ages filled St. Mary's Catholic High School with beautiful songs Wednesday evening.
The Intergenerational Choir, which is made up of St. Mary's students and staff as well as seniors suffering from dementia from around Oxford County, had their first concert performance on Wednesday.
The program began when Carmen and Noreen Holbrough wanted to bring the initiative to Oxford County after Carmen, who suffers from dementia, participated in a similar choir program in London.
Noreen explains why participating in the choir has helped patients.
"The value of music is just in dispensable. It's not widely known but as we age and faculties go, the last to go is music and we have many personal experiences of this."
The Alzheimer Society of Oxford provided students with training about the disease ahead of time so their were able to appropriately interact with the patients.
Paul Droog, one of the teacher representatives behind the project, explains how everyone has worked together to create this choir.
"We've got to see how the relationships have been developing between the members of the community, the Alzheimer patients, staff and students. Everybody is working together and collaborating."
The committee plans to offer another 8 week rehearsal and concert which will begin in March 2014. If you are interested in taking part either as a volunteer, or participant, please contact Rhonda Crouse at the Alzheimer Society of Oxford 519-421-2466 ext. 243.
