Ingersoll Handcuffed by Rising OPP Costs

The town of Ingersoll is facing a cash crunch in trying to finalize their 2013 budget. The main factor hitting the town hard this year is the rising cost of OPP service. It's going up 11% this year, and another 8.5% in 2014, making up 20% of the town's overall tax levy. Those were the cold hard facts presented by Ingersoll Mayor Ted Comiskey at the Ingersoll Chamber of Commerce's annual "Breakfast with the Mayor" this morning. Comiskey says compounding the problem is depleted reserves due to previous infrastructure repairs and tax appeals. But always an optimist, Comiskey says a new team of senior staff at Town Hall will lead them to future prosperity, "So right now we're at likely a very big low in our reserves and we have a very brilliant Treasurer (Jim Brown) in my opinion. And certainly a knowledgeable Economic Development officer (Kale Brown) that's pulled a team together to say, we're not just planning for today, we're not just planning for tomorrow, we're planning for down the road." While he didn't announce it to the crowd, he told Heart FM that taxpayers in the town can expect a budget increase around 4%. However, he stated that figure isn't solidified. The town has another budget meeting on Thursday night, are are hoping to present the budget to the public on April 18th.
