Improving Hydro Reliability in Woodstock and Beyond

Hydro One is going to install 500 new smart devices across the province this year including 14 new smart switches in Woodstock.

ONTARIO/WOODSTOCK - Hydro One is going to install 500 new smart devices this year in hopes of improving hydro reliability across Ontario.

The utility first launched this program back in 2018 and it has installed over 2,300 smart devices across 10 percent of their territory since then.

Spokesperson Alex Stewart tells us about these devices and how they work.

"Smart switches reduce the amount of customers who experience a power outage. Digital sensors better detect a problem area, reducing outage duration and time spent patrolling power lines."

He says some of these devices have already been installed in the Woodstock area and there's more on the way.

"In the Woodstock area, since the program began we have installed 90 devices. That includes 66 smart sensors and 24 smart switches. This year, we plan to add 14 more smart switches."

Stewart says these devices can reduce the impact of power outages by about 40 percent. He also says about 20-million customer minutes of power interruptions have been avoided since the smart devices program began.
