PERTH COUNTY - On cold winter days, it can be extremely tempting to leave your vehicle running. But, as some drivers are finding out, there may not be a warm car to return to.
Several vehicles have been stolen already in 2018 and most of the thefts have involved cars and trucks that were left running. Perth County OPP are reminding residents to keep a close eye on your vehicle while it is idling. They offer the following tips to stop you from becoming a victim:
- Park your vehicle in a well-lit area whenever possible
- Always lock all doors, even if you will only be out of the vehicle for a few minutes
- Remove valuables from your vehicle, or store them out of view
- Engage vehicle security system, if equipped
Warming up in the driveway, or idling in a parking lot, every vehicle left unattended is an opportunity for a thief. Criminals are always looking for easy targets; don't help them! West Perth Contract Sergeant Scott Bentley says these crimes are preventable.
"Preventable calls for service have an impact on everyone. Lowering these numbers allows our municipalities to continue investing in other areas."
