Students in Grade 9 have created their own projects in order to promote sustainability at Huron Park Secondary School and within the Woodstock community.
WOODSTOCK - It was a successful launch day for the Huron Park Secondary School Sustainability Challenge.
The project looks to help make the community and school more sustainable with the help of students.
Geography teacher Lindsey McLaren says all of the students involved are in Grade 9.
"Our goal is for our students to continue to be passionate about sustainability at Huron Park, and continue to grow their projects. We've already had students set up clubs or looking to implement further their ideas or creations next year."
Grant Chesney is really excited about his project with classmate Hayden Nowell. They created a solar-powered phone charger that will help power electronics.
"Back in February the school got a grant from the school board to do something that helps sustainability at Huron Park. So all of the Grade 9 students in Geography and Science got together with their peers and came up with eco-friendly project ideas."
Fellow student Judine Smith has decided to grow strawberries for Huron Park staff and students. The winners of the will be announced after receiving community feedback.
Funds for the projects were donated through a grant from the Community Futures of Oxford.
