The Woodstock Fire Department has some tips to make sure everyone has a safe and happy holiday season.
WOODSTOCK - The holiday season is upon us in Woodstock.
There will be many get togethers with friends and family to celebrate the time of year. The Woodstock Fire Department does not want to be apart of the festivities, so Public Information Coordinator, Lisa Woods has this message.
"Yes, Christmas is coming so quickly, but we want you to be mindful. Hanukkah started, which is the lights and the candles burning. Candles can be dangerous, so make sure they're in a sturdy glass container on a non-combustible surface."
You should also make sure the wax can drip into a non-combustible container, which will also prevent a potential fire.
Speaking of combustible materials, Woods says there's a few things you should keep in mind if you have a real Christmas tree. A real tree requires three litres of water each day and it should not be near any heating sources including fireplaces, wood stoves, vents, etc. You should also make sure the lights on the tree don't have any frayed cords and don't overload your power outlets.
Woods talks about cooking over the holidays and what you might want to do if you plan on having some drinks.
"Order out if you're enjoying the festivities or like I said, even plan in advance and have things that just need to be warmed up. We all want to have some festive cheer this year, but we want to do it safely without the fire department arriving."
Woods adds if you are going to cook make sure you stand by your pan and look while you cook this holiday season.
