Extra RIDE programs will be conducted in the Friendly City this holiday season, to make sure no one is driving impaired.
WOODSTOCK - Members of the Woodstock Police Service want to make sure everyone has a safe and happy holiday season. They will be conducting more RIDE programs than usual, in order to make sure people are not driving impaired while travelling to and from parties and celebrations.
Drinking alcohol can alter your attention span and can impair your reaction time, which can be very dangerous behind the wheel.
Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen says people should avoid drinking all together if they plan on driving later.
"It still alters your brain; it alters your blood stream. I would suggest people plan ahead get someone to drive you to the parties, call a cab. Just plan ahead and don't drive at all if you have been drinking."
If you register with a blood alcohol level between 0.49 and 0.99 percent, you could have your licence suspended for three days. You would have to go through a costly reinstatement process through the Ministry of Transportation and your car insurance would also go up. In some cases you may have to have an ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle and jail time is also possible.
VanLeeuwen tells Heart FM Woodstock Police and Oxford OPP will be rewarding those who have arranged safe transportation
"People that are being smart and choosing safe rides, we'll be giving them an information package and in that they actually get Hershey Kisses. Just a little treat for them for making smart choices."
The Oxford County Injury Prevention Team's Keep It Safe and Sober (KISS) Campaign will kick off on December 9th.
