A local co-ed slo pitch tournament raises funds for Oxford's Residential Hospice.
INNERKIP -- They hit it out of the park for Sakura House at the first annual Hits for Hospice.
The co-ed slo pitch tournament took over the diamonds of Innerkip on Saturday, in an effort to raise funds for VON Oxford's Sakura House.
SueAnn Marshall, along with Bobbi Jo Abbott organized the one-day tournament. Marshall says both had a personal connection with the residential hospice. "My dad, Alf Langdon passed away at Sakura House in 2011 and Bobbi Jo had a close friend pass away a year ago as well and we had experience with the amazing facility and the great support staff and we just wanted to do something to be able to give back."
Twelve teams participated in the one day tournament which Marshall says she and Abbott organized because of their love of baseball and their desire to support Sakura House. "We had some awesome support from both the Oxford Builders Womens' team and Jim Austin and his Mixers co-ed team, they did some fundraising on the side for us and we came up with a total of $8100."
Marshall also acknowledged the support of Timberland Equipment's team who held employee barbecues and donated over $1000.
The Oxford Builders women's team will make the cheque presentation to VON Oxford before their game next week.
Marshall says they are planning on holding the tournament again next year.
