A potential depot could be coming to Woodstock
WOODSTOCK- New provincial and federal grant funding could possibly move up the timeline on a proposed hazardous waste depot in Woodstock. A hazardous waste depot was a long-term goal for council, however since the funding came available it could speed up when the Friendly City will be getting the depot.
Woodstock City Council voted in favour of applying for funding Thursday which would cover the cost of the project. It won't be known for several months if the city will qualify for the funds. Councillor Jim Northcott says he is excited at the prospect of having a depot in the near future. "It would just be fantastic if we get it, it is in the budget for us to do it over the next 10 years step by step, but this would just bring it right up and we would get full funding for it, so I'm looking forward to it." Council will have to wait for several months to see if they have qualified for the funding.
Having a hazardous waste depot would allow residents to drop off waste once a month, compared to the current system that is in place which only allows for disposing of hazardous waste materials twice a year. In fact Oxford County council is proposing to cut that number down to only once a year. Woodstock City Council voted to oppose that proposal at County council.
The depot will come with a hefty price tag, of which Northcott says the majority would be covered through the funding."I think the report said the budget was around 2 million dollars to put in the hazardous waste depot and that's not just for hazardous materials but also for construction materials and patio stones, lumber and so forth."
