Hawkins Gignac Foundation Delivers 300 CO Alarms

300 new Carbon Monoxide Detectors will be going out into Woodstock in the months ahead. That's thanks to the Hawkins Gignac Foundation who delivered the detectors to the Woodstock Fire Department today. Foundation spokesperson, John Gignac says the firefighters are the best venue for getting the detectors to those that need them. "Our major mandate is to purchase CO alarms to give them to needy families. We do that through the fire department. We find that the fire department are ones who know their areas the best and who better than them to give out the CO alarms to the people that need them." Gignac calls Woodstock "ground zero" for the Carbon Monoxide awareness movement. His niece, Laurie Hawkins, an Oxford OPP officer, and her family died of CO poisoning nearly 4-years-ago. The Hawkins Gignac foundation was born out of that tragedy. Woodstock Fire Chief Scott Tegler says firefighters will be giving out the CO alarms as needed. "When we're out in an area, a home, and somebody has a fault alarm that has gone off. We keep these devices on our trucks and we'll replace them because we want to make sure everybody is protected."
