MPP Ernie Hardeman's Willing Host Bill has received unanimous support in the legislature.
QUEENS PARK - MPP Ernie Hardeman's Willing Host Bill has passed second reading in the legislature.
Other MPP's has their chance to voice their opinions on it yesterday afternoon.
Hardeman says the Liberals had some issues with it.
"The government side all seemed to say 'they're doing a great job by bringing it forward but they seem to have all kinds of problems with it.' They weren't very supportive of the principle but when it came time to vote they did vote for it so we got it passed."
Hardeman adds they're concerns are nothing to worry about.
"They're concerned if you have this the people developing landfills would have trouble negotiating and we couldn't bill anymore landfills. I think they're totally wrong! Obviously they can negotiate they have willing hosts for a lot of things that the municipality could stop if they wanted. I think there will be all kinds of opportunities to come up in negotiating places to put it."
Normally a third reading would be the next step forward, but that is not the case in this circumstance because house is getting ready to recess for the provincial election.
The bill will have to be reintroduced, but Hardeman is optimistic.
"Of course there will be different people there in different circumstances but the fact that you have gaged the house and it has had the support there, it sure is an indication that if they did it the first time they will do it again."
The bill looks to give municipalities the power to say no to landfills in their community.
