The Hamilton Planning Works Committee has voted to support a motion that says municipalities should have the right to say yes or no to landfills.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Hamilton Planning Works Committee is supporting Oxford's fight against the landfill.
They voted unanimously to support a motion; that states municipalities should have the power to say no to landfills.
Ingersoll Mayor Ted Comiskey says this is a step in the right direction.
"We're coming off an exciting moment there with Peel Regional last week who also unanimously voted on it. This won't be going up in front of council's but it's a very good feeling especially with the planning committees made up of council members."
Comiskey says they're not the only ones who have supported the cause.
"This gives us over 53 municipalities across Ontario so far that have agreed with the motion that municipalities should have the right to say yes or no. This is very exciting, I'm very pleased with it and hopefully this will go further across Ontario to make this all possible."
This issue hit close to home for Hamilton; after they won a battle against a proposed waste disposal plant last year.
Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman's Willing Host Bill looked to give the municipalities the power to say yes or no to landfills in their community. It passed second reading in the legislature, but will now after to be reintroduced after the provincial election.
