The County of Oxford is anticipating some major growth over the next 25 years.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County is set to grow from a population of 113,000 to just over 161,000 people by the year 2046.
County Council recently went through the draft phase 1 of the Comprehensive Review Study which looks at potential growth. The report, which helps inform the County’s Official Plan and other local initiatives, notes other continuing trends including an aging population, an increase in people moving from the Greater Golden Horseshoe area, and employment growth in the industrial and commercial sectors.
Warden Larry Martin says they do have some concerns about how the County will accommodate all this growth.
"I think as far as residential growth, I think we need to start going up more, instead of spreading out, because there is only so much land there and we have to make it last. Do you take good farm land? there is farmland and there is good farm land and that is where the growth is going to have to go, because the urban areas are, I'm not going to say maxed out, but they are getting close and they want to have a 20 year cushion, so we have to work together."
Most of the growth will happen in Woodstock, which could almost double in population, with growth also projected in Tillsonburg, Ingersoll and the larger rural villages.
