Grade 5 students were challenged to look beyond the way media portrays people to create an exhibit called 'Me Beyond What You See'
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Art Gallery was full of activity last night to promote an exhibit called 'Me Beyond What You See.'
Grade 5 students from schools around the region participated by drawing pictures to express their ideas about how people are so much more than how the media portrays them. These art pieces are now on display at the Woodstock Art Gallery.
Education Officer for the Woodstock Art Gallery, Stephanie Porter, finds this event extremely beneficial after a successful first year for the exhibit. Porter explains how the project came about: "This is a partnership with the Oxford County Board of Health. The Public Health Nurses approached Mary Reid, our Director/Curator, with a great community project opportunity. Mary approved the project and worked in partnership with the Oxford County Board of Health to create this fantastic exhibit."
Public Health Nurse Courtney Lapointe finds the messages inspiring. Lapointe explains why grade 5 students were chosen to create these pieces. "We targeted grade 5 students specifically because it is the time before you enter puberty, which is a very challenging time. It is important that the kids get the idea and the message - they have the body, but they are so much more than that."
With overwhelming support from the community, Lapointe is optimistic this is a major step to ensuring all students will be treated equally. "It is a really great opportunity for these kids to express themselves and express their ideas in a fun way that really gets the community involved." The exhibit is located on the second floor of the Woodstock Art Gallery and will run until Sunday.
