An athlete from Tillsonburg is raising money to earn a spot at the 2020 Paralympics.

TILLSONBURG - One local athlete is turning his dream into a reality.

Tillsonburg's Tyson MacDonald will compete at the 2019 World Para Swimming Series meet in Australia from February 15-17th. 

The trip will be expensive, however. So MacDonald and his mother have set up a gofundme page to cover expenses. 

"The gofundme page that my mom and I setup, we're using it because unfortunately Swimming Canada doesn't substitute or give any money to send its athletes that are going for classification down. So it's an expensive trip, but it's a necessary trip to hopefully see an athlete make the national team one day."

He's looking to reach his target of $5,000.00 before he leaves to Melbourne on February 9th. So far, he has raised over $1,200.00.

MacDonald has been swimming since he was five years-old and he's been a competitive para swimmer since he was eight. He'll be competing in the 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke and the 100m breaststroke. 

He'll be looking to earn his S14 classification in order to qualify for the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.

"The goal would be to try and hit top 10 in the world times for the intellectual classification category, and as well as even try to win at our trials."
