Go Slow When You See Snow

Emergency dispatchers have been inundated by calls with over 200 crashes reported over the past 24 hours in Brant, Oxford and Norfolk Counties.

OXFORD / BRANT / NORFOLK  - Over the past 24 hours West Region OPP are reporting over 200 collisions due to the snow on the roads. 

Among the crashes include a snow plow being hit, a police cruiser being struck from behind in Brant County and another incident involving a school bus in Oxford County with 22 students on board.  

Constable Ed Sanchuk says when you see snow go slow.  

"The good news, no injuries associated to any of those collisions, the bad news is that we still have people driving like it is a hot sunny day.  So we are asking people to please slow down, reduce your speed and make sure your vehicle is equipped with a good set of winter tires, good set of wipers, your vehicle is filled with gas and turn your headlights on." 

Sanchuk says emergency dispatchers have been inundated by calls from people asking about road conditions, and he asking the public to use alternatives.    

"If you are calling 911 or our communications centres to check on the road or weather conditions.  Please don't tie up valuable resources, please use the Weather Network, use 511, they will have updated list of weather conditions and road conditions, or rely on your local radio station for information." 

The message is clear from OPP, go slow, make safety a priority, eliminate distractions and be prepared before heading out on the roads during this winter season.
