A public school in Tillsonburg received $500 from the Lessif fund for their breakfast program.
TILLSONBURG - Students at Westfield Public School in Tillsonburg have received a boost to their nutrition program thanks to a $500 donation from the Lessif Family Fund.
Registered Dietician and School Nutrition Program Coordinator Kelly Ferguson says these programs have been running in Oxford for around 14 years now. "The student nutrition programs in Oxford County feed over 10 000 students in 39 schools. They usually offer a breakfast or a morning snack including two or three food groups from Canada's food guide. And the goal of the programs is that they are universal so they're available to all students at the school."
Ferguson says when students are distracted by hunger, they tend to perform better in class. "We recently did a survey of some schools in Woodstock and Oxford County areas and found that teachers report improved academic performance and enhanced access to healthy food among students. And students all wanted the program to stay at their school."
There is also a way you can follow the Lessif family's example - the Ontario Student Nutrition Program has launched a campaign called 'Say Yes.' "You can go online to www.sayyes.studentnutritionpledge.com to make a free pledge to support students receiving nutritious breakfast and snacks. So you can go online, write your name in, pick the school that's closest to you or that you have kids at, and a dollar will go to that school."
