Investigators will be in Beachville today to see if a funnel cloud touched ground in the area last night.
OXFORD/ELGIN - A funnel cloud was spotted in Beachville, but it's unclear if it actually touched ground to become a tornado.
Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for Oxford County at around 7:50 p.m. last night and it was called off at 8:19 p.m.
Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Steven Flisfeder says another funnel cloud was spotted in Talbotville, northwest of St. Thomas, and it did touch the ground.
"The Northern Tornadoes Project, they were able to go out to St. Thomas area last evening and they found a damage path associated with that funnel cloud. They have given it a preliminary rating of an F0 tornado."
They will be in Beachville today to investigate the funnel cloud in that area.
Flisfeder says funnel clouds are formed whenever there's an upper-low system.
"It's a low-pressure system that's not at the surface but more so in the middle atmosphere, so a few kilometres above the ground. It creates rotation within the environment already, so if there is a strong enough updraft from the storm at the surface connecting with that rotation already in the atmosphere, it can spawn funnel clouds and in some cases landspout tornadoes."
He adds we could see more funnel cloud activity today, but the exact location has yet to be determined. Environment Canada will be monitoring the situation.
