Even more upgrades are coming to the headwaters of Cedar Creek in Woodstock.
WOODSTOCK - A new partnership means more improvements are on the way for the headwaters of Cedar Creek in Woodstock.
A recently approved grant of $65,000 from the Environment and Climate Change Canada and a $45,000 commitment from Gunn's Hill Limited Partnership will be used for the area. This project will take a team effort. The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority will coordinate the restoration work in partnership with Oxford County, Oxford County Trails Council, and Stewardship Oxford.
Community Partnerships Specialist at the UTRCA Brad Hertner says work will start this Friday.
"Volunteers from OCEC, Oxford County Trails Council, and Stewardship Oxford will join approximately 1,200 local students to make this project a reality. Volunteers will help with planting trees, shrubs and aquatic plants, as well as in-stream and stream bank projects. The students and partners will also help with monitoring, community tours, and planning the future trail system."
The goal of this project is restore natural channel features and function to the Cedar Creek corridor, as it flows through the Cedar Creek Swamp. The project will transform 1.75 km of Cedar Creek, through stabilizing the creek bank, building riffles, planting trees, shrubs and aquatic plants, and installing nesting structures. A recreational trail system is another component, allowing the public to enjoy this jewel of Oxford County while learning about the natural features and efforts made by the community to enhance the property.
Cedar Creek Swamp is located 2 km south of Woodstock between Highway 59 and Sweaburg Road.
