Southwestern Public Health is offering free radon gas kits starting in Monday. The kits detecting the potentially harmful gas will be available, while supplies last at the Public Health office in Woodstock.
WOODSTOCK - November is Radon Gas Awareness month.
You cannot smell or taste radon gas and all buildings have it. Elevated levels cause a health risk and it is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada. Public Health Inspector with Southwestern Public Health Kayla Elms says radon is in every home.
"It is actually a misconception that you need to have a basement to have radon in your home, or that certain homes can be more susceptible, radon can enter the home at any point, where there is an opening where the gas can enter, where the house contacts the ground."
Outside, radon gas is harmless, but when it accumulates in the home, radon gas can pose a significant health risk. Elms says you can get the kits at any home hardware store.
"So indoor radon levels can depend on a variety of factors. The only way to know how much radon is in your home is to test for it, radon levels can even vary between neighbours."
Southwestern Public Health is distributing a limited supply of 200 free test kits available to area homeowners to encourage testing in the region. You can pick up a free kit at the Health Unit in Woodstock on Buller Street starting this Monday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. They will only be available while supplies last.
