Tavistock Minor Hockey handing out donated equipment to those in need
TAVISTOCK - Tavistock and District Minor Hockey is doing everything they can to ensure every child has the opportunity to play the sport.
The Executive sat down and realized cost could be a roadblock for some kids so they came up with a program to help cover the cost of registration and started an equipment donation drive.
President Larry Kropt says they went to their membership and asked if anyone had equipment they were willing to donate.
"The response was fantastic! We collected the equipment at our wrap up day last spring and we had another collection day in the summer and today we are making that equipment available to who ever wants it."
Kropt says skates of various sizes are the item they have the most of.
"Which is great because it's probably the largest ticket item as well for anybody who is trying to outfit a player for minor hockey. Some of the other items we have fewer sets of but I would say we probably have enough full sets of equipment to outfit 25-30 kids."
"This is the first year we have done it. I've been thrilled by the response and we expect it to be an annual event and our expectation is that the program will continue to grow from here."
The equipment will be handed out free of charge this evening from 6-9pm on a first come first served basis on the North side of the Tavistock arena.
Equipment donations will also be accepted.
