The thief processed a refund of $4,900 to their card and left the store without anyone noticing.
WOODSTOCK - There's a new fraud in the area and it targets businesses with debit machines.
According to Woodstock Police, someone manipulated the debit machine at a local store at around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday March 9th.
The culprit cancelled the purchase and managed to process a refund of $4,900 in less than a minute. They left the store afterward without anyone realizing.
Police say this is known as refund manipulation and there are a few ways businesses can prevent this from happening. They should always monitor their transactions closely, use secure payment devices and audit their refunds regularly. It's also a good idea to have a manager approve refunds over a certain amount and report any suspicious activity.
Anyone with information regarding this case should call the Woodstock Police Service at 519-537-2323. You can also submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
