Fraud Prevention Month in Oxford County

Police responded to nearly 20,000 reports of fraud last year, with Ontarians losing over $47 million.

OXFORD COUNTY - March is Fraud Prevention Month and the OPP will be providing tips all month to help stop you from becoming a victim.

This year the OPP will be focusing on fraud prevention by highlighting five topics related to online safety and security. 

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the amount of frauds happening in our area have increased dramatically. With more and more people shopping online, scammers are looking to take advantage. This past year numerous Canadians, businesses and organizations have fallen victim to the destructive toll of cyber enabled crimes.

Last year alone, Police responded to nearly 20,000 fraud reports where victims in Ontario lost $47 million. 

Some basic online tips include:

- Creating strong passwords;
- Avoid opening unsolicited emails or clicking on suspicious links or attachments;
- Restricting the amount of information shared publicly;
- Show caution with regards to social media; and
- Update technical security software.

If you do fall victim to a fraud or know someone who has, we urge individuals to contact your local police service and the CAFC by phone at 1-888-495-8501 or online by way of the Fraud Reporting System (FRS), even if a financial loss did not occur.
