ORILLIA - March is fraud prevention month and with that OPP officers gathered in Orillia to combat a major problem that affects nearly 14,000 people a year, resulting in almost $70 million in 2014 which was significantly up from the previous year. Oxford OPP were on hand for the meeting that stated the majority of victims were between the ages of 50-74. Fraud can destroy the economy, and peoples financial situations which was one of the big topics covered.
A social media campaign is being introduced to get the public assisting the police by using the hashtag #dontbeavictim #fraudprevention and #OPPtips. 86 percent of Canadians were contacted in some way over past year with fraud related material.
