You might see some police officers from other areas in Woodstock as the Four Cities Initiative kicks off.
Multiple police detachments are joining up for a big traffic initiative.
Officers from the OPP and the cities of Woodstock, London, Stratford, and Saint Thomas are joining up for this yearly campaign. Stratford Police Inspector Same Theocharis says they will be paying close attention to the roadways as they visit neighbouring cities.
"The initiative deals with officers going to partner cities, joining forces with local police and enforcing the highway traffic act. This year again we are looking at enforcing distracted driving and traffic violations involving intersections."
Last year between 65 and 75 charges were laid in Stratford during the campaign, but Theocharis says that number could be far larger in other cities.
Theocharis says they get the word out ahead of time because they want to focus to be more on education than laying a swath of charges.
"We put it out in the media and social media prior to the event. It's not something we intend to surprise the public with. It's something we forewarn them about and let them know it's going to happen. It gives the advantage to the citizen 'Hey, I better remember the rules of the road or I might get a ticket in Stratford from an officer from London.'"
All municipal and OPP sworn police officers in Ontario have the authority to lay charges throughout the Province of Ontario, and visiting officers will be laying the appropriate charges when dealing with infractions of the Highway Traffic Act.
