OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County is submitting thoughts on the proposed Food and Organic Waste Framework for the province.
About one third of the waste in Ontario's landfills is food and organics, and the plan is looking to change that.
County Council has gone over a report from the Public Works Department and Zero Waste Oxford. Warden David Mayberry says they recognize that something needs to be done.
"We agree with some of the ideas; particularly around how do you reduce the amount of organics and how do you reduce the amount of food wasted."
But Mayberry says each community should be able to handle the issue in their own way.
"We don't have any problem with the regulations; we just want to have the authority to be able to address it in an Oxford style rather than necessarily a style that might fit London or Toronto. Each community needs to have that sort of ability to address the organics going forward."
The Oxford report also highlights the county's efforts to explore technologies that could take this kind of waste out of the dumps.
