Flu Season has arrived in Oxford County
Flu season has arrived in Oxford County.
Oxford County Public Health does have a couple of cases of lab reported flu in the community. Program Supervisor in Health Protection Elaine Reddick explains some ways you can protect yourself.
"People should stay home if they are sick, they should cough and sneeze into their sleeve and they should practice good hand hygiene."
Reddick says it's too early to say if the flu shot was a good match this year.
"It's a little bit early to say for sure, in Canada it's a lab in Winnipeg that will do that testing and it is really early in the season to know what the effectiveness is, they will be releasing a study in mid February. The Influenza B that we have been seeing in Oxford County, it does look like it is not the one in the regular vaccine, however it is covered in the vaccine for children that has 4 strains in it."
Reddick says they still recommend getting the flu shot.
Three Long Term Care and Retirement Homes in Oxford County have been hit with an influenza B outbreak. The outbreaks have occurred at the People Care in Tavistock, the Maples in Tavistock and Woodingford in Tillsonburg.
