First Week Challenge To Quit Smoking On Now!

Those who are registered in the challenge have to try to remain smoke free for at least seven days.

OXFORD- Some smokers are currently participating in this months First Week Challenge, which encourages them to quit. Those who are registered in the challenge have to try to remain smoke free for at least seven days.

Monica Bennett, Regional Coordinator with the Smokers Help Line explains why they decided to make the challenge last seven days.

"What we know is that if you quit smoking for seven days, you are nine times more likely to be successful in your quit attempt. Seven days feels a lot more manageable to people so they think I can do this, I can do it for one day I can do it for seven days and then if they do it for seven days they are much likely to be more successful long term."

On average about 500 to 700 smokers participate in the challenge each month. Once you are registered you are also entered into a draw for $500.

Bennett adds the challenge is held on a monthly basis.

"If they didn't sign up this time and in fact even if they did sign up this time and they weren't the person who was drawn they still sign up the following month. You have to re-register, we don't keep your name but you have a chance to do it again."

Smokers have until the end of the previous month to sign up for the next months challenge. For example, if you would like to sign up for the August challenge you must register by July 31st. 

You can register by calling the Smokers Help Line at 1-877-513-5333 or visiting the First Week Challenge website. The phone number written on the inside of each cigarette package will also direct you to Smokers Help Line.
