Ingersoll will play host to firefighters from around the country as FireFit kicks off today.
INGERSOLL - This weekend residents of Ingersoll may notice more firefighters around the area as the Scott FireFit Championships come to town for the second time.
A giant obstacle course has been set up and Ingersoll's event will be extra special because spots for the National Championships are on the line. Vice President of Operations for FireFit, Hilary McRoberts, explains how far competitors have travelled to take part in the competition. "We will have firefighters from across the province as well as some visiting from as far as British Columbia. Many of them have been training all year to compete in this event; it is an obstacle course that basically gives you an idea of what firefighters have to do at any given time when they are called to an emergency."
The public is invited to watch all the festivities that begin on Friday. McRoberts outlines why returning to Ingersoll for a second time was the right decision. "They did a fabulous job, the response was great, they had a super crowd, and the location just worked really well for everybody. They sort of extended their small town atmosphere to the whole event and really welcomed all of our competitors, and it was a no-brainer to go back to Ingersoll. They did a great job." McRoberts is looking forward to seeing their past competitors but is also looking forward to new additions attempting to claim a spot in the National Championships.
McRoberts encourages people to come out and cheer on the firefighters. "Your going to see some outstanding performances this weekend, we have some of the top competitors in Canada. Anybody that hasn't seen this should come out and see what these guys and gals are doing." McRoberts is expecting another packed house and finds new competitors will push harder when they have a group cheering for them.
The three day championships will wrap up on Sunday evening with all the events happening at the Ingersoll Arena.
