Fire Safety This Holiday Season

The Woodstock Fire Department has some helpful safety tips to keep your Christmas tree safe over the holidays.

WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Fire Department hope you deck the halls and be fire smart during the holidays and starting with the Christmas tree.

Whether your picking a fresh tree or if your picking an artificial tree you should always keep your home is fire safe. The fire department want this reminder to be at the highest priority when decorating your tree as it only takes seconds for a Christmas tree to go up in flames. Public Coordinator for the Woodstock Fire Department, Lisa Woods says it's important to light your tree safely.

"Just make sure that good, sturdy lights. Check for any frays, we don't want ones that are too old, or tones that heat up and replace any that have loose or damaged cords. Also definitely read the manufacturers' instructions to see how many strands of light you can connect together."

Woods also had these helpful tips to add.

"When picking a tree choose the tree with fresh needles that don't fall off and make sure when you place it that the tree is at least 3ft away from any heat source. So this means radiators, candles, fire places, heat vents or lights. Anything that could warm up and potentially cause a fire."
