The Woodstock Fire Department push the importance of having working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home
WOODSTOCK - It's fire prevention week and the Woodstock Fire Department is working hard to get the message out to have working smoke and CO detectors.
Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says those detectors can be the difference between life and death.
"The message I want to get out is hear the beep when you sleep, like I say, fires mostly happen between 11 pm and 7 am when people are sleeping and studies show that people will sleep through the smoke alarm, so we are suggesting that if that's you or if you don't know it's you have a test in the middle of the night and maybe consider putting the alarms in your bedroom."
Woods also wants families to have an escape plan in place and suggests practicing it so everyone knows what to do in case of a fire.
"That's noted in recent fires that we have had in our area, everybody needs to know how to get out, two ways to get out of every room and you need to establish a meeting area outside the home so when firefighters arrive they know if anyone is still inside that they need to rescue."
Another thing, every home should have is a 72 hour emergency preparedness kit.
